Kyrgyzstan: Media announced Blackout Day in protest of pressure on the press

On October 28, the mass media of Kyrgyzstan refused to publish news and official information from state bodies in protest of the restriction of freedom of speech in the republic.

For three hours the media space of Kyrgyzstan didn’t publish news, from 9 am to 12 pm (Bishkek time). But restrictions on posting official information from state bodies on news portals will last until the end of the day.

The action of solidarity is held under the single hashtag #күччындыкта #силавправде [strength in truth] against the background of increased pressure.

“The media community of Kyrgyzstan calls on the authorities to stop the massive and unprecedented pressure on freedom of speech and freedom of the press, to stop criminal prosecution of journalists, bloggers, civil activists and other persons who freely express their opinion,” the Kyrgyz media said in its statement.

It’s worth noting that not all media supported the action. So for several hours of silence such news portals as Vecherniy Bishkek, Sputnik and Akipress were posting the news.
