Kyrgyzstan: Opposition politicians and activists will spend almost two months in jail

The decision to arrest the detained activists and politicians was made until 5 am.

On October 24, the Pervomaiskiy Court of Bishkek chose a measure of restraint for activists, politicians, bloggers and journalists who were detained under Article 36-278 “Preparing to organize mass riots” of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic.

As a result, the Pervomaiskiy District Court of Bishkek placed in custody until December 20 the following detainees: activist Erlan Bekchoroev, ex-member of the CEC Gulnara Jurabaeva, journalist Aidanbek Akmatov, politician Ravshan Jeenbekov, ex-deputy Asiya Sasykbaeva, activist Aibek Buzurmankulov, activist Perizat Suranova, activist Chingiz Kaparov, activist Chynarbek Shabdan uulu (Ali Shabdan), activist Taalay Mademinov, ex-head of the State Committee for National Security Keneshbek Duishebaev, activist Nurlan Asanbaev, ex-deputy Kubanychbek Kadyrov, politician Bektur Asanov, human rights activist Klara Sooronkulova, politician Zhenish Moldokmatov.

Human rights activist Rita Karasartova will remain in custody until December 21, activist Ulukbek Mamataev – until December 22, and politician Azimbek Beknazarov – until December 23.

All of them were placed in pre-trial detention center No.1 in Bishkek.

The international human rights organization Human Rights Watch issued a statement on the detention of opposition politicians and activists, in which it condemned the actions of the authorities. The organization calls on the authorities of Kyrgyzstan to release the detainees and ensure their rights are respected during the investigation of the case.

On October 23, in Bishkek, the houses of politicians, human rights defenders and activists were massively searched. Later, more than 20 people were placed in temporary detention facilities for 48 hours. All detainees are members of the committee for the protection of Kempir-Abad reservoir.
