Kyrgyzstan: Officials of the State Environmental Protection Agency are accused of corruption

The Prosecutor General’s Office of Kyrgyzstan detained the head of the department and the former deputy director of the State Agency for Environmental Protection and Forestry. This was reported by the press service of the State Agency.

The Prosecutor General’s Office of the Kyrgyz Republic initiated a criminal case against officials of the State Environmental Protection Agency under Article 336 “Corruption” of the Criminal Code of the republic.

“It was established that in 2018-2019, officials of the State Agency, having entered into a criminal conspiracy with representatives of a gold mining company, underestimated the hazard class of waste. This has led to a reduction in the amount of pollution charges. As a result, the state suffered damage in the amount of more than $1,200,000 (100 million KGS),” the Prosecutor General’s Office explained.

During the investigation by the investigative department of the Prosecutor General’s Office of the republic, on October 6, on suspicion of committing the specified crime, the head of the Department of state environmental expertise, as well as the former deputy director of the State Environmental Protection Agency, were detained and placed in the temporary detention center of the Main Department of Internal Affairs of Bishkek. They were charged under Article 336 of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic; a preventive measure in the form of detention was chosen.

The investigation into the case is ongoing.
