Kyrgyzstan: EU supports decision to acquit Bolot Temirov

The European Union welcomes the court’s decision that acquitted well-known investigative journalist Bolot Temirov of most of the charges. This was reported to the EU Delegation in Kyrgyzstan.

“We call on the government of Kyrgyzstan to ensure a fair trial in full compliance with national law and international human rights obligations during the subsequent appeals process,” the statement says.

The EU reiterated the importance of ensuring freedom of expression and guaranteeing the personal safety of all journalists in the exercise of their professional activities.

On September 28, the Pervomaiskiy District Court acquitted investigative journalist Bolot Temirov. He was accused of illegally manufacturing drugs, illegally obtaining citizenship of the Kyrgyz Republic and illegally crossing the state border.
