Tajikistan: court behind closed doors sentences son of informal GBAO leader to 16 years in prison

In Dushanbe, Salam Imomnazarov, the son of the deceased informal leader of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region Imomnazar Imomnazarov, was sentenced to 16 years in prison, he was killed in 2012 under mysterious circumstances in his own house.

Salam Imomnazarov was convicted under several articles of the Criminal Code of Tajikistan, including drug trafficking.

The trial took place in the Dushanbe pre-trial detention center back in June, but it became known only on August 22, when Salam Imomnazarov was transferred to Khujand to serve his sentence.

Human rights activists say that none of the relatives were informed about the court session, so it is impossible to obtain complete information about the charges. They say that one of those detained in 2015 for drug trafficking, a drug courier from GBAO, testified against him.

In addition, Salam took an active part in the shootout that took place the day after one of the informal leaders of GBAO, Tolib Ayombekov, was injured on September 5, 2021, in a fight outside the Marco Polo restaurant in Khorog. Salam Imomnazarov was shot in the back during a shootout and left for treatment in Istanbul.

Upon returning from Istanbul on February 19 this year, Salam Imomnazarov was detained at the airport and immediately placed in a pre-trial detention center.

Salam Imomnazarov was actively involved in sports before the death of his father, he managed to perform twice in international judo tournaments. But he did not earn points and lost both of his first bouts.

After the death of his father, Salam was engaged in entrepreneurship. According to relatives, Salam Imomnazarov pleaded not guilty, but at the same time asked them not to try to appeal the verdict, as he “does not believe in justice and considers appealing to a higher court to be useless.”
