Tajikistan: journalist accused of extremism to stand trial

The authorities have completed the investigation against the journalist and blogger Abdullo Gurbati, and all the materials of the criminal case against him have been submitted to the court.

The court of the Shokhmansur district of the capital confirmed that on August 17 they received the materials of the criminal case against Gurbati, but refrained from further comments.

It is only known that Gurbati was charged under three articles of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Tajikistan: 330, part 1 “Publicly insulting a representative of the authorities in the performance of his official duties or in connection with their performance”, 328, part 1, “Violence, not dangerous for life or health, or the threat of violence, as well as the threat of destruction of property against a representative of the authorities or his relatives in connection with the performance of his duties” and 307 note 2, part 2 “Participation in an extremist community”.

Under the first two articles, the journalist faces a fine, but in the case of extremism, he can receive a specific term of four to seven years.

Gurbati himself denies all accusations against him. This young journalist and blogger prepared outspoken reports about the existing problems in society, and he has already been attacked twice by unknown persons who, according to Gurbati’s colleagues, thus tried to silence this brave and principled journalist.

The IRPT also denies any connection with Abdullo Gurbati, believing that in this way the authorities are again trying to denigrate this party, which is banned in Tajikistan, and “slap” Gurbati with a harsher sentence in order to put him behind bars.
