Turkmenistan: new law fails to protect homeless animals – mass killings continue

On July 26, the law “On dog breeding and cynological activities” signed by the President of Turkmenistan S. Berdimuhamedov came into force. This law prohibits any cruelty to animals and harm to the health of stray animals.

ACCA sources said the new law had no effect on the situation. Over the past weekend in the cities of Turkmenabad, Mary, Bairam-Ali, Ashgabat, Balkanabat and Turkmenbashi, mass killings of homeless animals continued. At the same time, dogs and cats are not shot but beaten to death with fittings, their legs are broken and their spines are broken, and the survived animals are sent to specialized hangars, where they slowly die of hunger and disease eating each other. Employees of local housing and communal services are engaged in massacres, and on weekends they receive double pay for their “labor”.

In Turkmenistan, there is only one kennel for breeding dogs of the Alabai breed. There are no shelters at all and there are several hangars where animals do not come out alive.

Recall that cats and dogs began to be massively killed on the verbal order of the former president of Turkmenistan, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. This massacre has been going on for more than a decade. During this time, thousands of homeless dogs and cats were beaten to death, poisoned and starved to death in the country. The authorities of the country and the state media have never discussed, much less acknowledged the existence of this problem.
