Kazakhstan: former mayor convicted of $98.5 thousand bribe

The former mayor of the city of Kentau, Turkestan region, Dauren Makhazhanov, received 10 years in prison for taking a large bribe.

Makhazhanov was arrested at the end of February this year. The Anti-Corruption Service suspected him of receiving $98.5 thousand through proxies from an entrepreneur engaged in the repair of roads in Kentau.

On May 27, the case of Makhazhanov, as well as his proxies Lavrenty Bobryshev and Baurzhan Tyumebaev, was brought to court.

In court, the investigation was able to prove the guilt of the defendants. As a result, by the verdict of the Almaty Interdistrict Criminal Court, Makhazhanov was sentenced to 10 years in prison in a strict regime colony with a life ban on holding positions in government structures.

Tyumebaev and Bobryshev were also found guilty of mediation in bribery and sentenced to one year in prison in a colony settlement.

The verdict has not yet entered into force.
