Tajikistan: auditors revealed a shortage of $120,000 at the National Bank

Faizali Ahmadzoda, Deputy Head of the Accounts Chamber of Tajikistan, said at a press conference on July 14 that during the audit of spending public funds at the National Bank, financial violations of 1.2 million somonis were revealed – this includes illegal spending of monetary funds, and overestimation of the cost of repair and construction jobs, and tax evasion.

According to him, no measures have been taken against the perpetrators yet, but in the coming days the results of the audit will be submitted to the government and then administrative and disciplinary measures may follow.

In general, the Accounts Chamber of Tajikistan in the first half of 2022 conducted about 90 inspections, which revealed financial violations in the amount of about 160 million somonis, which is 75 million more than in the same period of 2021.

The head of the Accounts Chamber, Karakhon Chillazoda, said at a press conference that out of the total amount of financial violations (160 million somonis), almost 14 million were illegal spending of funds, 1.2 million were shortages and misappropriation of funds, more than 9 million – registrations in the field of repair and construction work, and most of the amount – more than 52 million somoni – was tax evasion.

According to him, as a result of the measures taken, almost the entire amount of financial violations was restored.

The Accounts Chamber is the body of financial control of the state, but it does not have the authority to independently bring to justice public servants who are involved in embezzlement and other economic crimes. Therefore, many experts believe that this body cannot fully fight corruption.
