Kazakhstan: regional official gets 10 years in prison for accepting a bribe

In the Aktobe Specialized Inter-District Court for Criminal Cases, the trial on the case of the head of the regional department of agriculture Dimash Talasbaev, who is accused of taking a large bribe, has ended.

Talasbaev ended up in the dock in January of this year. As the investigation established, in 2020, Talasbaev promised to help one company become an operator for the supply of guaranteed cheaper diesel fuel to agricultural producers in the region for spring-autumn fieldwork. The official estimated his help and patronage at $71.5 thousand. Upon receiving the first tranche of a bribe in the amount of $33,000, Talasbaev was caught red-handed by corruption fighters.

It should be noted that the investigation charged the official with part 4 of Article 366 of the Criminal Code – the repeated receipt of bribes by civil servants on an especially large scale. On this charge, the official was threatened with punishment in the form of imprisonment for a term of 10 to 15 years with confiscation of property, with lifelong deprivation of the right to hold certain positions or engage in certain activities.

It is no coincidence that the lawyer of the defendant, Zhanbolat Eleukin, filed a petition to re-qualify the Talasbaev case from Part 4 to the softer Part 3 of Article 366 (from seven to twelve years, with confiscation of property, with life deprivation of the right to hold certain positions or engage in certain activities).

However, the court denied the application.

As a result of the consideration of the case, the former head of the department of agriculture of the Aktobe region was sentenced to 10 years in prison to be served in a strict regime colony with a life ban on holding positions in the civil service and in the quasi-public sector.
