Kyrgyzstan: The court has acquitted Almazbek Atambayev and other participants in the October events

On June 28, the court session on the October events of 2020 ended in the Pervomaiskiy District Court of Bishkek.

All the suspects, as well as the former President of Kyrgyzstan Almazbek Atambayev, were acquitted due to the absence of corpus delicti in their actions. Together with him, in the case of the October events, the defendants were the ex-head of the presidential apparatus Farid Niyazov, the former prime minister Omurbek Babanov, the former deputy interior minister Kursan Asanov, the former officer of the state guard of the State Committee for National Security, as well as the leader of Turan party, Jenish Moldokmatov, and the head of social democrats – Temirlan Sultanbekov.

The state prosecutor asked to recognize all the defendants in this case as guilty under Article 278 “Mass riots” of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic. Atambayev was asked to be sentenced to 12 years in prison, Farid Niyazov and his bodyguard Kanat Sagymbaev – to 7 years, Temirlan Sultanbekov, Kursan Asanov and Jenish Moldokmatov – to 9 years in prison.

At the same time, based on the decision, the Pervomaiskiy District Court of Bishkek also decided to release Almazbek Atambayev and Farid Niyazov from detention under house arrest. The rest of the defendants in this case are already under house arrest.

It’s not yet clear whether the state prosecutor will appeal the case. It’s also not clear how the decision on transfer to house arrest will be carried out in relation to the former President of the Kyrgyz Republic Almazbek Atambayev. Since by the verdict of the Pervomaiskiy District Court of Bishkek dated June 23, 2020, he was found guilty under the Article “Corruption” of the Criminal Code of Kyrgyzstan and sentenced to imprisonment for a period of 11 years and 2 months with confiscation of property.
