The nephew of the first President of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, the former first deputy chairman of the National Security Committee (NSC), Samat Abish, is under investigation in the case of the January events.
Such a vague wording, without indicating the procedural status of Abish, was given by the deputy chairman of the NSC, Askar Amerkhanov.
As ACCA has already reported, on January 8, after the January events, the chairman of the NSC, Karim Masimov, was arrested on suspicion of treason.
At the same time, there were rumors about the involvement in the events of Nazarbayev’s nephew Samat Abish and that he was detained. However, on January 14, the NSC officially denied this information, saying that Abish retained his post, but was on annual leave. But on January 17, it became known that the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, officially dismissed Abish from his post.
Since then, nothing has been known about the fate of Nazarbayev’s nephew – until today.
“He testifies, but I don’t know his status. I didn’t see him. But I think that he is in Kazakhstan, because the investigation is underway,” said the deputy chairman of the NSC.
Askar Amerkhanov also shed light on how Karim Masimov’s case is progressing. According to him, the trial of the former chairman of the NSC, accused of treason and corruption, will most likely take place this autumn. However, Amerkhanov found it difficult to say whether the trial in Masimov’s case would be open. At the same time, he didn’t say anything about two former deputies of Masimov – Anuar Sadykulov and Daulet Yergozhin, who are also suspected of treason, forcible seizure of power or change in the constitutional order of Kazakhstan and abuse of power.
Answering journalists’ questions, Amerkhanov added that four former heads of departments of the National Security Committee (from Kyzylorda and Almaty regions, Almaty and the former head of the 5th Department) are under investigation.
It should also be recalled that another nephew of Nazarbayev, Kairat Satybaldy, is accused of abuse of office and embezzlement of funds of the National Telecom Operator – Kazakhtelecom JSC on a large scale. His ex-wife Gulmira Satybaldy is suspected of embezzlement of budget funds on an especially large scale – over $1.5 million. Another relative of the first President, businessman Kairat Boranbayev, is a defendant in a case of embezzlement of budget funds on a large scale.
And recently it became known about the criminal case initiated against Nursultan Nazarbayev’s brother Bolat Nazarbayev and his ex-wife Mayra Kurmangalieva under the article “Raiding”.
Meanwhile, Nursultan Nazarbayev himself, in his last interview, stated that if one of his relatives behind his back used his name as a cover for breaking the law, then they should be held accountable.
