The Pervomaiskiy District Court of Bishkek has completed the proceedings on charges of former President Almazbek Atambayev of illegally issuing passports to Turkish citizens and abuse of office during the construction of a school in Kalys-Ordo residential area.
Almazbek Atambayev was taken to the court from the colony by ambulance.
Part of the meeting, where the episode with passports was considered, was closed, but the court considered the construction of a school in Kalys-Ordo residential area in open mode.
Atambayev refused to give a last statement, and judge Mirlan Termechikov immediately went to the retiring room after the hearing. Upon returning to the courtroom, he announced the verdict, according to which Atambayev was acquitted on both episodes due to the lack of corpus delicti.
In June 2019, the Parliament of the republic deprived Almazbek Atambayev of the status of ex-President and immunity due to the charges against him, which led to the initiation of a number of criminal cases, including the riots in the village of Koi-Tash on August 7-8, 2019, corruption and money laundering. By the verdict of the Pervomaiskiy District Court of Bishkek dated June 23, 2020, Almazbek Atambayev was found guilty under the article “Corruption” of the Criminal Code of Kyrgyzstan and sentenced to imprisonment for a period of 11 years and 2 months. In relation to him, the confiscation of property was applied with the subsequent conversion into state ownership.
In the summer of 2021, he was also charged with illegally issuing passports to Turkish citizens and organizing mass riots in October 2020.
