Uzbekistan: The head of Andijan began to testify against his accomplices

After the testimony during the interrogation of the former head of Andijan, the head of the Regional Department of Public Education, Azizbek Mirkomilov, was detained. The number of those arrested in the case of embezzlement from the budget of more than $5 million is approaching 40.

The news of the arrest was confirmed by the press service of the Regional Department of Public Education. The official took office in February 2021 after a series of criminal cases initiated, including, against the former heads of City Departments – Sunbula Eralieva and Nuriddin Nazarov.

Earlier, ACCA wrote about the long epic about the dismissal of Andijan’s hokim Bakhromjon Khaydarov. He was detained during the preliminary investigation. The hokim was prosecuted for financial crimes committed during his tenure as head of the Finance Department of Andijan region from 2017 to October 2019.

The Anti-Corruption Agency conducts a monthly rating assessment of the effectiveness of anti-corruption reforms and the intolerant attitude of the population towards corruption. According to the results of this rating in Andijan region, there is a negative trend in all indicators.

It was recorded the largest number of corruption crimes over the past three months in the region. Andijan region ranks first among the regions, the population of which applies to the Virtual Reception of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan and people’s receptions most of all on the facts of corruption. In 2021, 18 criminal cases against 22 individuals were sent to court. They were charged with embezzlement of public funds, fraud, bribery and abuse of office. 4 of them are employees of the regional hokimiyats, 18 are employees of district and city hokimiyats.
