Kazakhstan: More than 600 corrupt officials were exposed since the beginning of the year

Over the five months of 2022, over 1,000 corruption crimes were registered in Kazakhstan. More than 600 corrupt officials were exposed, 110 of whom worked in state structures as heads of various levels.

Olzhas Bektenov, chairman of the Anti-Corruption Agency, cited such statistics at a meeting with the country’s President, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

According to Bektenov, over $500 million has been returned to the country’s budget since the beginning of the year as part of the President’s order to ensure compensation for damage caused to the state.

Meanwhile, according to the Committee on Legal Statistics and Special Records of the General Prosecutor’s Office of Kazakhstan, only in January-April of this year, 973 corruption crimes were committed in Kazakhstan, of which 700 are classified as serious offenses, 224 are of medium gravity, 37 are of minor gravity and 12 especially severe.

As for the ranking by the composition of the crime, “Taking a bribe” is still in the lead (288 crimes), “Giving a bribe” is in second place (266), “Fraud” is in third place (153), and “Misappropriation or embezzlement of entrusted property” is in fourth place (96 ), “Abuse of power” is in the fifth place (68). Of the 973 registered corruption crimes, 116 were committed by persons authorized to perform public functions.

For comparison: in the three months of this year, as ACCA has already reported, 725 corruption crimes were committed, that is, an increase of 34.2% over the month.

It’s also worth recalling that President Tokayev announced a merciless fight against corruption in April. However, judging by the report of the head of the Anti-Corruption Agency and the reports of the Committee on Legal Statistics and Special Accounts, his announcement had no effect. On the contrary, corrupt officials have become even more unrestrained.
