Khomidjon Muhammadzoda was appointed to the post of chairman of the City Court of Khujand in November 2021. The appointment and dismissal of judges in the country is the prerogative of President Rahmon. The experts argue that in this situation, the judiciary in the republic cannot be considered independent, that judges will protect the interests of the executive branch of government, and not stand guard over the rule of law.
To date, there are more than 400 judges in the judiciary in Tajikistan. Over the past few years, dozens of judges and court employees have been prosecuted for committing corruption offences.
