Kyrgyzstan: Journalist Bolot Temirov was stripped of citizenship

The authorities of Kyrgyzstan have canceled the passport of journalist Bolot Temirov. The corresponding decision was made by the investigator. Temirov announced this on his Facebook page.

“Without a trial, by the decision of the investigator, all my passports were declared ‘not valid’… That’s a pretty kettle of fish!” he wrote.

According to the journalist, the investigator deprived him of citizenship, referring to the provision on the passport, according to which the document is declared invalid based on the decision of the Department of Internal Affairs. Despite the fact that Temirov appealed against this decision, citing the investigator’s lack of such powers, the Prosecutor’s Office recognized the investigator’s actions as lawful. So, the passport is not valid in the database.

At the same time, according to Article 37 of the Constitutional Law of the Kyrgyz Republic on citizenship, only a commission of the Ministry of Justice, which studies materials on the conclusion of the Prosecutor General’s Office, can deprive a person of citizenship.

It’s worth recalling that at the beginning of this year, a criminal case was opened against Bolot Temirov for making drugs without the intent to sell. Later, the investigation was launched into forgery of documents and illegal crossing of the border of Kyrgyzstan. Bolot Temirov, on the other hand, connects criminal cases with his professional activities. Namely, he started having problems with the law after the publication of the investigation into the family of Tashiev. The head of family, Kamchibek Tashiev, is Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan and Chairman of the State Committee for National Security.
