Kazakhstan: The top officials of the National Museum are suspected of corruption

The Anti-Corruption Agency revealed a large-scale theft of public funds in the National Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

According to the Agency, a pre-trial investigation is underway against the Museum’s officials on the fact of embezzlement of budgetary funds in the amount of $325,000 under a public procurement agreement for holding the international exhibition “The Procession of the Golden Man through the museums of the world”.

It should be clarified that this project started in 2019. The first show of the exhibition was held at the State Museum-Reserve “Kazan Kremlin” in Tatarstan. Then the exhibition was held in the leading museums of Uzbekistan, North Macedonia, Turkey, Malaysia and Greece. For three years, the symbol of Kazakhstan (the Golden Man) was presented in 12 countries of near and far abroad. In total, over the years of the project implementation, the exhibition was visited by over 1 million foreign visitors.

The Golden Man is the main pride of the history of Kazakhstan. This is an archaeological find made in 1969-1970 of the last century. It represents the remains of a Sak warrior in golden clothes.

It should also be noted that the National Museum of Kazakhstan is a structure that is part of the Ministry of Culture and Sports of the country. According to official data, during three years, more than $2.6 million was allocated from the budget of the republic for the holding of the international exhibition “The Procession of the Golden Man through the museums of the world”.

Recently, the Anti-Corruption Agency stated that every fifth corruption crime in Kazakhstan is committed in the field of public procurement.
