Turkmenistan: The President pardoned 514 convicts in honor of the holiday

The President of Turkmenistan signed another Decree on pardon in honor of Gadyr gijesi (Night of Omnipotence) holiday. On April 22, 514 convicts under various articles were pardoned.

Amnesties, carried out in Turkmenistan, are one of many ways to improve the image of the country’s President. Overcrowding in Turkmenistan’s prisons remains critical. According to ACCA sources, by the beginning of 2022, the country occupies a leading position in the world in terms of the number of prisoners per head.

In terms of the number of prisoners, Turkmenistan is more than 2.3 times ahead of the United States and ranks first in the world. There are 1416 prisoners per 100,000 people in the country. Over the past three years, 11,921 prisoners have been pardoned in Turkmenistan; in 2019 – 4188, in 2020 – 4296, in 2021 – 3437 prisoners, respectively.

Also, the problem of enforced disappearances remains relevant in Turkmenistan. According to the company “Show them alive!”, there are more than 120 people missing in Turkmen prisons. The authorities of Turkmenistan continue to use the penitentiary system to crack down on objectionable citizens of the country.
