Turkmenistan: authorities impose new restrictions on women

In Turkmenistan, mass closures of beauty salons, women’s and men’s hairdressers are taking place under the threat of fines or 15 days of arrest, and up to criminal prosecution.

Hairdressers are forbidden to dye and bleach the hair of their clients. Now you can only do a haircut and hair setting; various hairstyles are also banned. Massage parlors and beauty salons are also closing everywhere.

In the city of Turkmenbashi, at the request of the police, girls from some massage parlors were fired. The police forbid them to work. The owners of beauty salons and hairdressers are summoned to the police and demanded to write receipts stating that they were interviewed and would no longer violate the laws, although all these prohibitions were introduced verbally and have no legal force.

Beauty bans and discrimination against Turkmen women have been going on for the past 5-6 years, but since Serdar Berdymukhamedov came to power, discrimination has intensified. In recent years, women have been banned from driving cars and obtaining a driver’s license. Women cannot wear trousers and skirts; dresses must be to the floor and not tight to the body. Bikinis are banned; women must swim and relax on the beach in Turkmen national dresses, the same ban applies to women of non-Turkmen nationality. Now eyelash extensions, Botox, depilation, tattoos, massage, hairstyles (women’s and men’s) are banned. Men are forbidden to wear shorts and dye their hair and beards. The country is also experiencing massive closures of nightclubs and bars.

Official authorities and state media don’t comment on unofficial bans and increased requirements for appearance.
