Due to the war in Ukraine, attention to the situation in GBAO has waned even in the Tajik segment of social networks, which is fiercely arguing and swearing on the issue of fighting on the European continent.
Only Radio Ozodi published a note that Mamadbokir Mamadbokirov (whom the authorities call the leader of organized crime in this mountainous region, but the local youth consider him their cult figure and hero, opposing the central authorities) was slightly wounded in Khorog.
“On March 4, Mamadbokir Mamadbokirov was taking his children to school, to Aga Khan Lyceum located not far from the building of the State Committee for National Security in GBAO,” one of the witnesses to the incident told reporters. “On the way, an unknown car wanted to block his path, but he managed to bypass this car. After that, unidentified people in civilian clothes got out of the car and started shooting at Mamadbokirov’s car.” Meanwhile, another witness said that the unidentified men shot in the air and not at the car.
Mamadbokir Mamadbokirov told reporters a slightly different version.
“I went to Khorog. At the crossroads, submachine gunners jumped out and opened fire,” says Mamadbokir. “My son was also in the car. The bullet hit my right arm; the bone wasn’t affected. A familiar doctor cleaned the wound, treated and bandaged it.
This occurrence raises many questions about the situation in Khorog. Previously, almost all the media informed that Mamadbokir Mamadbokirov was in a state of siege in his house and for more than a month the inhabitants of Khorog have been waiting for a special operation to capture their idol and his supporters. “Residents of Khorog organized round-the-clock duty on the roads leading to Bokir’s house to prevent his detention,” journalists write on social networks.
“I won’t give myself up to the authorities alive,” Mamadbokirov said then. And now there is information that a man under siege every day drives his children by the Regional office of the State Committee for National Security to the lyceum, and due to the lack of reliable sources and the Internet, it’s not possible to verify this or that version.
Meanwhile, the new head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for GBAO, Lieutenant-General of Militia Sharif Nazarzoda, who previously headed the internal affairs bodies in Sughd region, and then in the city of Dushanbe, has already arrived in Khorog. Speaking to new subordinates, Sharif Rahmon said, “I will rely on the wisdom of the glorious people of Badakhshan, and together with all the inhabitants of the region we will achieve significant results in our work to ensure public order, prevent crime, strengthen the rule of law and strengthen peace, stability and mutual understanding.”
When asked by journalists about Mamadbokirov’s injury, the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs said that he didn’t know anything about what had happened. “No one contacted us about this,” Sharif Nazarzoda told reporters.
A shootout in the city center and the wounding of the informal leader of Gorno-Badakhshan didn’t lead to new mass protests. “I urged them (my supporters) to calm down and said that I would personally deal with this,” Mamadbokirov explains. Meanwhile, he once again stated that he doesn’t accept any of the proposals of the authorities on his surrender to law enforcement agencies. “The authorities promised me that if I surrendered, they would fine me, and they would pay the fine themselves. I refused them. I also refused to meet with the generals,” said Mamadbokirov. “According to the authorities, I shouldn’t stay alive. I disturb them.”
